I've had a lot of requests for SAS patches. Right now, we are offering a pre-order for them. They will just be over 3 inches in size, full color, velcro backing. The patch will be our shield, cut out in shield shape. They are high quality made by Patriot Patch which specializes in tactical patches. Because of how expensive they are, I can only afford to order a small batch of them. If you’re interested, send an email with quantity to hbartocci@smallarmssolutions.com and I will send you an invoice through PayPal. Pre-order is the only way to secure you will receive one since I’m not ordering very many. The price is $12.50 and that includes shipping. It will take approximately 3 weeks to receive.

After many years of testing and contract issues, India has finally chosen a 5.56mm rifle from Caracal. Caracal International has won the 93,000 rifle order worth $107 million US dollars.
In previous years, India had a contract for a 7.62mm weapon system that started with three in the final running: the Sig 716, IWI and Caracal 817. With all three rifles meeting the performance requirements, it came down to a bidding war between the three. Sig came in $160 below Caracal, thus winning the contract. This was a less than profitable contract for Sig, but never-the-less they had won it. The India 5.56mm program goes back several years with numerous trials with the highest quality rifle/names in the industry. Caracal International is based out of Abu Dhabi, UAE, with US offices in New Hampshire and Idaho, as well as, Caracal GmbH located in Suhl, Germany. Caracal contracts can be made out of any locations. Both Sig and Caracal made it down to the final two for the 5.56mm rifle. Like all contracts, once two systems meet the requirements, it all comes down to the who will out bid the other. Last week, several of my viewers forwarded me two articles on mechanical problems with the MARS-L rifles that LMT had manufactured for the New Zealand Defense Force, and they wanted to know what my take on it was.
As many of you know, I am an avid supporter of the LMT products and feel the rifle that the Kiwi’s procured was perhaps one of the finest battle rifles in the world. One which I would be ecstatic to carry if forced into harm’s way. So, what went wrong? First, everything I am discussing here is my personal opinion of what caused these issues.
Although, I have worked for LMT in the past doing technical writing, training and intel work, I have not worked for them since 2015. I have had little to no communication since then and, in fact, have had great difficulty getting product to review since then. I receive no commissions, perks nor anything from LMT for promoting their equipment. I have promoted the MRP system since its introduction around 2003 when working on my book, Black Rifle II. Since then I had been a loyal champion for LMT as an author. At that time in 2003, LMT was a rather small organization and for the first time was just releasing their own full firearms. I worked directly with Karl Lewis on my media work. They were not well known by the commercial market, but well known by the manufacturing industry making OEM components for several high-end manufacturers.
In the 2001 time period, the current U.S. military weapon system M16/M4 came under scrutiny during the initial Global War on Terrorism. US Special Operations operators experienced issues with failure to extract, bolts breaking, barrel overheating/ruptures, and malfunctions in the desert environment. The program commenced in June of 2000 and was initiated by Jim Schatz and Ernst Mauch of Heckler & Koch, which would become known as the HKM4. Ernst Mauch decided he wanted to pursue similar improvements to the existing M16/M4 weapon systems. Former Tier 1 U.S. Special Operations operator Larry Vickers went to work with Heckler & Koch to develop an improved M4 which would correct the deficiencies they encountered.
While visiting H&K on another matter, Vickers noticed a blueprint hanging on the wall of former H&K CEO Ernst Mauch of an M4 adapted to a G36 gas system. Vickers knew there was a requirement in his unit for a short barreled (10.4 inch) CQB rifle to replace the Mk18 currently in use. SOCOM had found the short 10.3 inch weapons experienced significantly more malfunctions than the M4 with the 14.5 inch barrel in various operational conditions. Additionally, H&K staffers, Tom Kivlehan and Bruce Davidson, worked along with Mauch, Schatz and Vickers to get this program off the ground and eventually into military testing and acceptance. In August of 2000, USSOCOM held a "PMOD" Conference in Indianapolis to discuss their planned "Platform MODifications" effort they hoped would address the many documented deficiencies in the M4. HK staff, Mauch, Schatz, and Volker Kurtz was present and briefed on the first drawings of a monolithic (one piece upper receiver and rail system) M4-style upper with a G36-style op rod gas system. The proposal was reportedly well received by many military program staff (including, Gus Taylor from Crane and the Army’s Steve Holland). As recalled by several people, Colt Defense killed off the PMod program making exclusivity claims to the M4 and that only they could make such modifications to “their M4”. Given the time frame and the lack of cooperation, this spawned the invocation of the SCAR program, which would allow SOCOM to pick a new weapons platform that they would be the project manager on and could modify, at will; rather than use Colt M4A1 carbines that they could not make changes to, due to them being a “TDP” commodity and having to go through the big army to change.
The Barnes name has been synonymous in the firearms industry since its founding in 1932 by Fred Barnes. In 1965, the company was sold and renamed Colorado Bullet Company. Then in 1974, Randy and Coni Brooks purchased the company. After getting consultation from Fred Barnes, they acquired the right to change the name back to Barnes Bullets. To date, Barnes has been known for producing solid copper projectiles for hunting, law enforcement and military applications. They also load cartridges with OTM projectiles.
The projectiles in all forms are loaded by most all of the major ammunition manufacturers throughout the country, including: Black Hills, Corbon, International Cartridge Company, Norma, Wheatherby, Sellier & Bellot, Double Tap, Pierce Ammunition, ASYM Precision Ammunition, Federal and Silver State Armory, etc. However, in 2010, Barnes began loading their own ammunition for its VOR-TX line. This would include pistol, rifle and safari calibers. This is a solid copper projectile with a polymer tip inserted to give better ballistic performance and to assist in speeding up the mushrooming process when the projectile strikes tissue. These are primarily hunting loads.
