Proprietary Nickel Boron product. NiB-X is 40% harder than chrome and has a Rockwell 70 hardness. This is much harder than Nickel Teflon (~Rc45), Hard Chrome and MeloniteTM (Rc55). The process temperature for Melonite and other salt bath nitrocarburizing is 1050°F and too high for many components. The coating has a very slippery feel and is easy to clean. The finish is corrosion resistant.

CHROME
Chrome has been used on this weapons platform since its inception, such as the original AR10, AR15 (Colt 601, M16 and XM16E1). Chrome has proven to be corrosion resistant, harder than the steel in which it is applied, as well as, lubricious. Chrome has self-lubricating properties. It makes cleaning very easy, most fouling wipes off with a rag. Today the mil-spec still calls for chrome plating of the inside of the bolt carrier, carrier key, and the firing pin. The carrier and bolt were changed to Manganese Phosphate due to chrome application issues in the 1960’s. Due to poor QC, the chrome would crack. Once it cracked it would corrode under the plating.
